Interview with Abdulrahman AL-Daithan
Muslim-photographer.com is pleased to have with us the photographer Abdulrahman AL-Daithan.
Abdulrahman AL-Daithan is an active contributor to Flikr.com where his blooming portfolio blossoms with incredible landscapes, conceptual, wildlife and portraiture photography.
He had started photography 10 years ago with a simple 3megapixel digital camera which was made by a company called Orite.
Shortly after graduating from high school he tried to improve his photography technique by purchasing a sony cybershot after saving money for some time. This was a big step for him as at that time he was teaching himself Photoshop and reading whatever photography book that he could get his hands on.
In 2007 he decided to go up a level and purchase his first DSLR camera as compact cameras were limited with shutter speed, aperture, ISO, etc. At the end of a one year’s successful saving session he purchased his first DSLR camera, the wonderful Nikon D40.
After experiencing and enjoying the DSLR environment he decided to get himself some new equipment. In January 2010 he made the move to a mid-range professional camera by purchasing the superb Nikon D90.
Abdulrahman AL-Daithan is currently a medical student in Kuwait University.
When did your interest in photography begin?
I started back in 1998 when I was capturing shots with canon 35mm film camera.
You seem to enjoy all types of photography, from astro through to conceptual, which style do you prefer?
Astrophotography is a very special style as not many photographers are interested in it and for sure it is one of my most preferable ones. Landscape photography is one of the styles that I’m interested in too.
How important is the digital darkroom for you? And what is your favorite software?
Without a doubt the Digital darkroom is one of the greatest changes that have been introduced into the photography field as with digital everything is faster, easier and cost effective comparing to the old times real darkroom. But, one needs to keep in mind that the photograph needs to be good in first place to get a great final result. As I like to say “You can’t get a nice final result photo without it being perfectly captured “.
My favorite program is Adobe Photoshop.
You have lots of photos from Egypt, how do you find the people in terms of interacting with you and the camera?
I went to Egypt in summer ’09 and it opened a whole new vision of photography for me as I haven’t tried travel photography before but it was an amazing experience.
About people interaction: I was afraid at the beginning to capture shots of the people there but my friends pushed me into it and I am glad I had tried it as it brought my interest to portrait photography and helped me to make new friendships.
We can see you are D90 fan, so are we here at muslim-photographer.com, how do you rate the D90 against all other cameras that you have had?
D90 without a doubt it is one of the best cameras on the market nowadays. You can also recognize that from the fast growing usage of this camera worldwide.
I’ve used a Nikon D40 before the D90 and I’ve used a Nikon D80 and D5000 but overall Nikon D90 is the best when it’s comparing to them.
What would be your dream kit?
Aha , that is a hard question without a doubt.
Nikon D3S is one of the best cameras that have ever been made so getting it is like a dream come true.
Adding to it, Nikkor 10.5 mm fisheye lens, Sigma 10-20mm, nikkor 50mm f/1.4 and Nikkor 28-300 f/3.5 VR with sb900 flash.
Have you faced any problems in Kuwait with the current paranoia towards cameras, or is it just media gossip?
The situation of photography in Kuwait is weird as it is known without a doubt that some places are not allowed to be photographed e.g.: Liberty Tower even though it is one of the greatest architectural buildings in Kuwait.
But about the late issue of banning DSLR outdoors I believe it is just a media gossip as I didn’t face any problem lately.
Who inspires you in photography and why?
There are a couple of people on flickr that inspire me e.g.: Giuseppe Parisi and Lucie.
Guiseppe is very dedicated to photography and Digital matting that doesn’t exclude his creative shot and lighting technique.
Lucie is one of the greatest travel photographers that I’ve seen. She has such a stunning and breathtaking photostream.
If you could be anywhere in the world right now…dream kit in hand…where would that be and why?
I would be in Iceland to capture the aurora borealis (or the northern lights).
Can you share a tip with us or some advice?
When I first started taking photography seriously I was told that it is an expensive hobby and it needs a lot of money to get a great shot but that’s not true with a simple DSLR camera or snap-shot (compact) and great knowledge of photo editing you can capture your best shot ever.
Also, always keep a camera with you.
